Abstract: I will analyse the value and role of so called local knowledge – both in the sense of knowledge of local facts and of knowledge provided by local communities – and describe the potential negative consequences of neglecting its inclusion in scientific/technological expertise. I will illustrate by means of a case study: the Vajont dam disaster in 1960s Italy.
