Call for contributions to Special Issue of Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations
“The City and Social Mobilization: Rights, Actors and Fields in times of Urban Crisis”

With this special issue of Voluntas we focus on urban areas and urban conflicts as the specific contexts and sites of social mobilisation and civil activism. We invite authors to apply a wide range of research methods and theories to the study of urban civil society actors, for example within – but not excluding other frames – the global framework of the “right to the city” movement or the recent urban regeneration development. We expect contributors to draw conclusions relevant for a wider international audience of scholars and researchers.
We aim at including both qualitative as well as quantitative papers, encouraging authors to use a mixed methods approach when possible. However, comparative papers are also welcome. Our aim is to contribute to existing theories by offering insights from diverse empirical and theoretical contributions concerning urban civil society mobilization all over the world and in a variety of urban settings. We especially welcome contributions using field theory (e.g., Fligstein & McAdam 2011, 2012) perspective or social networks theory (Diani 2000, Diani & McAdam 2002), but other theoretical approaches are also very welcome.
Contributions should be in the field of civil society and/or urban studies scholarship, focusing on different forms of collective actions in modern urban contexts. Submissions should clearly state their theoretical basis, research methods and theory contribution in the wider international context of urban civic mobilization.
Please submit an abstract of no more than 700 words (excluding references) by October 10th, 2016, providing information about your research question/s, relation to the special issue topic, as well as the theoretical framework and the applied methods. Abstracts should be sent to anna.domaradzka@uw.edu.pl and urbantink@gmail.com and will be reviewed and selected before October 30th, 2016. Full papers will be expected by the end of March 2017. However, you can speed up the publication of your paper by earlier submission, thanks to Voluntas online-first strategy, which means that accepted papers will be published in digital form immediately after editing.
